University of Hawai‘i; Mānoa where she is pursuing a Ph.D. and comprising her archives for a dissertation on surfing. Lane hosted a surf blog/column for
Oceanic Cable, the
Honolulu Star Advertiser and
Surfing World Japan for over a decade while also contributing to range of publications on a regular basis. She has also archived
a daily surf report on Twitter for over ten years and even at 49, she still surfs almost everyday at her favorite spots Pipeline and Ala Moana Bowls. Lane was Hawai‘i State Champion in 1993 and competed on the professional world tour from 1998-2002 while representing her own clothing label
Us Girls. Her introduction to professional writing emerged with creative ad copy she used to promote her company and written responses to interviews for magazine features, but eventually she became inspired to document the explosion of womenʻs surfing and its fashion which began in the early to mid 90s. Her desire to write eventually lead her back to school and teaching. LaneSki is an advocate of Hip Hop Kulture and volunteers her time to hold workshops and sessions in O‘ahu’s local community centers. She started b-boying (breakdancing)in Seattle, Washington in 1983 and seeks to bring diversity to education through the arts and the blueprint of Hip Hop, which incorporates community and forms of “intelligent movement”.
“Hip is to know, it’s a form of intelligence. To be hip is to be update and relevant. Hop is a form of movement, you can’t just observe a hop, you gotta hop up and do it. Hip and hop is more than music Hip is the Knowledge, hop is the Movement. Hip and Hop is Intelligent movement.”
